जाफ़ना, श्रीलंका के उत्तरी प्रांत की राजधानी है। जाफ़ना और किलिनोच्ची ज़िलों की 85% आबादी हिंदू है। हिंदू शैव परंपरा को मानते हैं। बाकी लोग ज़्यादातर रोमन कैथोलिक या प्रोटेस्टेंट हैं, जिनमें से कुछ कॉलोनियल बसने वालों के वंशज हैं, जिन्हें बर्गर कहा जाता है। तमिल जाति के आधार पर बंटे हुए हैं, जिसमें किसान जाति वेल्लालर ज़्यादातर हैं। समुद्री चीज़ें, लाल प्याज़ और तंबाकू जाफ़ना के मुख्य प्रोडक्ट हैं।

उत्तरी प्रांत के बारे में

2007 में नॉर्दर्न प्रोविंस की आबादी 1,311,776 थी। ज़्यादातर आबादी श्रीलंकाई तमिलों की है, और अल्पसंख्यक श्रीलंकाई मूर और सिंहली आबादी है। श्रीलंकाई तमिल इस प्रोविंस की मुख्य भाषा है जिसे ज़्यादातर आबादी बोलती है। दूसरी भाषा सिंहली है जिसे 1 प्रतिशत आबादी बोलती है। शहरों में इंग्लिश बहुत बोली और समझी जाती है।
